GODSPELL publicity

january 20, 2008

What exactly is GODSPELL? This is a question we hear often. Some people recall it as filled with “hippies,” others as a “clown show,” but few seem to remember anything else – other than perhaps their reaction to seeing Jesus depicted as a curly headed guy wearing a Superman t-shirt and floppy shoes. Our production will contain none of the above: no hippies, no clowns, and no floppy shoes.

GODSPELL is a loosely constructed collection of parables and stories from the four gospel accounts of the earthly life of Jesus. The stories are told playfully and with a contemporary sensibility. Therefore a judge and a priest may become a Supreme Court Justice and Billy Graham – or perhaps Yosemite Sam and Tweety Bird. Either is possible. The story relates the same essential truth in either case.

It’s also a musical filled with beautiful and memorable melodies and rhythms. Drawing on traditional hymns, prayers, and scripture from both the Old and New Testament, the music gives voice to the praise, thanksgiving, entreaty and longing of people dedicated to walking with Jesus.

When the authors selected and re-ordered the material they focused on Jesus as a teacher (rather than healer or miracle worker, for example). They chose the teaching stories that center on Jesus instructing his followers about how to be in relationship with one another and with God. This is how community is formed – both in the play and in our lives.

Please share this website with a neighbor, friend, co-worker or grocery store clerk! Spread the good news with this lighthearted, profoundly hopeful production of GODSPELL.
