GODSPELL and Preaching The Gospel of Today!
Over the course of the last several weeks Reverends Lyndy and Tyler have focused on various aspects of Jesus in their sermon series, always anchoring the importance of the man and his plan in the world we live in right here and now. Meanwhile, each Sunday afternoon the cast and crew of GODSPELL has been gathering in the basement to encounter and bring to life the stories and parables attributed to Jesus in the gospel accounts of his life. It has been a remarkable juxtaposition.
We struggle: who are the Samaritans in our world? If we were to hear the story on the news, who would be the most surprising choice for the one who stopped to help? What surprise would make it a special feature on the news at 9:00?! Maybe a homeless person, beaten down and cast out of society just like the traveler in the parable is cast off the road. Maybe someone from a scary neighborhood – maybe a neighborhood we’ve never been to – one that we expect to produce guns and gangs instead of acts of kindness (even though we know it’s a nasty stereotype to live with). Maybe a Samaritan is a Muslim wearing a turban, someone who at first glance it is all to easy to label: ENEMY. And once we’ve identified that Samaritan, what does it mean to love her/him? Is it about valentines, or justice?
As we prepare this musical for you, we struggle through story after story this way. We hold ourselves accountable for every line. Have we spent sufficient time trying to understand? Have we listened for the Spirit in this? Are we being faithful to our understanding? That is our goal – that and to have a whole lot of fun together. Please come share in spirit filled event.
